Research and Planning: photographs for college magazine

These are the photographs I took in order to create my college magazine.

Research and Planning: Evaluation

I like the layout of my college magazine, as it generally follows the conventions of any magazine. I used the college colour scheme for my magazine as when I interviewed students from the college, they said this would be the best idea. However, this means I could not follow the typical three colour rule, which most magazines use. I used photoshop to create my front cover, and InDesign to create my contents page. I think the font on my contents page is too big, as usually in magazines the text is much smaller, so when creating my music magazine I will incorporate this into my work. I downloaded the masthead font from 'DaFont.com' and I thought it would be appropriate for a college magazine, as the font is very much a school style.

I used the same house-style for both my contents page and my front cover, so they do look like they are from the same magazine; they follow the same colour scheme, and font style. The images I used are appropriate for a college magazine, as they show a student from the college, and also photos from around the college; Costa Coffee- which is appropriate as it features in one of the stories, and the main entrance of college. I think the photograph I used on the cover is appropriate as it is a Medium Close Up, which is what is typically seen on a magazine. I used photoshop to remove the background of the image, so it kept with the colour scheme, and showed a back background. I think that I should have wrote a few more stories on the contents page, as it looks very spaced out according to the front cover, which looks very busy.

I tried to suit the magazine to the target audience; by including stories which they would want to read. When interviewing students, they gave me a few ideas of what stories they would like to include, which influenced the stories which have been written on my front cover.

Research and Planning: Practise Fonts

These are examples of possible font styles I would use for the three mastheads of magazines we were given; death metal, popcorn, and pop world.

Research and Planning: Audience Research

Our target audience for our college magazine would be the students of Hyde Clarendon Sixth Form, we interviewed a selection of students from the college, which we recorded. From our audience research, we found out what our audience would want us to include in a college magazine. One of the things we found we should use the college colour schemes, as our audience said this would work well. Everyone we interviewed said we should use real college students to make the magazine appeal more to the students of the college. we have found that the average price we would charge for our magazine would be 80p, as this would be affordable to most students. They said they would like us to include student experiences for our stories. They also said the more social side of college would appeal to them as oppose to the work side.

Research and Planning: medium close-up examples

These are examples of medium close-ups, found on the internet.
A medium close-up is a shot of the head and shoulders, from the chest upwards.

Research and Planning: College Magazine Analysis

Masthead: College Lifestyle.
We can see this is a college magazine as it shows a photograph of a student holding text books.
The person on the cover appeals to college students as he is young, and is dressed casually.
It is also clear that it is a college magazine as it says 'make money on campus' as one of the stories.
The target audience for this magazine would be someone who goes to the college probably of the ages 17-19, as it seems to be a college/university magazine from America.
It is also clear that the magazine is aimed at students from the titles of other stories such as: 'college couture', 'why we love blackberry' and 'the ultimate spring break escape'.
There aren't many colours on the magazine, as it has stuck to a colour scheme of Green, White and Black, which shows it probably has the same colour schemes as the college.
It also has the common features of all magazines, such as a Barcode, Issue Number and Date, Slugline, and price.

Research and Planning: In Design

  • I researched a review for The Inbetweeners Movie on google.
  • I then copied and pasted the review into a Microsoft Word Document.
  • I saved the Microsoft Word Document
  • I then opened InDesign, I opened a A4 sheet and added column guidelines
  • I then clicked File, Place, which placed the Microsoft word document into In Design
  • I placed the text into the columns so it looked like an article
  • I then went on the internet and found a photo from The Inbetweeners Movie, which I saved
  • I then clicked file and place again, and selected the photograph.
  • To resize the photograph, i changed the size then clicked Object, Fitting, Fit Content to Frame.
  • I then added some text with the text tool and changed the colour with the swatches
  • I then added a background colour by using a rectangle tool, which i colured yellow, i sent this to the back by pressing Object, Arrange, Send to Back

Research and Planning: Film Poster

  • I got a Zoolander film poster from the internet, I saved it and opened it in a photoshop file.
  • I also got a photograph of Louis Walsh from google, which I saved and opened as a photoshop file.
  • I then used the magnetic Lasso tool, to cut out Louis Walsh's face.
  • I dragged Louis Walsh's face to cover Ben Stiller's face.

Research and Planning: Photoshop Challenge

  • I opened an A4 document on photoshop, by clicking File, New, International Paper, and I selected A4.
  • I then wrote 'AS Media Studies' by selecting the Text tool, I changed the font on the drop down menu at the top, to Century Gothic. I then changed the size of the font to 24.
  • I highlighted the text and changed the colour to red using the colour swatches on the toolbar to the right.
  • I made the background blue by clicking the fill bucket tool, making sure the background layer was highlighted, i chose the colour blue and clicked the background.
  • I then highlighted the text and gave it a drop shadow by clicking layer, layer style, then Drop Shadow.
  • I then saved a photo as Katy Perry and opened it as a photoshop document, I dragged it into the blue background.
  • I then dded a blue tint to Katy Perry's hair by selecting the brush tool, but giving it a low opacity, I then chose a dark blue with the colour swatches at the side.
  • I added a border to the photo by adding a box and placing the layer underneath the photo of Katy Perry

Research and Planning: Skin Tutorials

I removed her spots and blemishes using the 'spot healing brush tool'. I then used the duplicate layer tool, which made her have a more dewy skin tone, I then changed the opacity so she didn't look as 'cartoony'. I then added some lip colour by having a low opacity and altering the brush size. I then added blusher by zooming in and applying it with a large brush. I added eyelashes with a brush size of one so they appeared very fine. I sightly changed the hair colour, with a low opacity so that it didn't look as fake.

Reasearch and Planning: Introduction to Photoshop

I used the filter tool to make the background with the musical notes wavy. I also used the lasso to cut out the background of the CD, I dragged the CD onto the background. I used the lasso tool to cut out the trumpet, and I selected the inverse and dragged it onto the background. I then changed the colour of the trumpet to make it more brassy. I rotated the CD and changed the colour to make it more red/orange to fit in with the rest of the cover. I pressed the eye, so the musical notes were no longer hidden, and come onto the background, I then moved them so they looked as though they were coming from the trumpet. I then added some text, to make it stand out I changed the colour to brown and added shadow and glow. I also rotated the text and made it larger so it stands out over the trumpet.
